SEO is constantly changing, so keeping up with the times can be overwhelming. Focus on optimizing your site this new year to stay ahead of the game and avoid getting buried by the competition.

Take the time to check your website for kinks. Work on developing your social media skills, which are now crucial for online success. And never forget, engaging content that draws in readers and encourages them to share with others is the new foundation of SEO.

    Get Your Links in Check

Backlinks are crucial, but they're not all equal in the eyes of Google. Some backlinks may even hurt your site's credibility.

Effective links come from quality sources. Back in the day you could purchase backlinks to improve your site's page rank. Today, these types of links can send up red flags that get you booted off Google entirely.

Links that come from a variety of different domains prove the value of your content, but a high number of links coming from one domain look suspicious.

Anchor text that others use to link to your site should contain relevant keywords. This is also true when you create internal links to your own content, so be mindful of words and phrases you use when creating links.

Don't forget to include outbound links in your posts. Link to high-quality sites with appropriate subject matter to improve your rank and benefit readers.

    Build Your Social Media Muscle

If you want to prove your site's worth to Google, social media skills are crucial. Don't avoid outlets like Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. Schedule 15 minutes or so each day to share your content and interact with readers on various platforms.

If you're going to make your mark in the social scene, you need to create content that's attention-grabbing and sharable. Take time to generate interesting headlines. Collect compelling images. And as always, offer something of value.

    Take Advantage of Google+ Power

Maintaining activity on Google+ is a powerful way to improve your page's rank. You can insert links directly in your Google+ posts by adding the entire URL. Google turns it into a link that grows more valuable with shares and +1s.

A title tag is a weighty contributor to search engine rankings. The first sentence of your post--along with your Google+ name--is considered a title tag and is used by Google for search engine rank. So choose your keywords carefully when sharing your post.

Google AuthorRank is another valuable SEO tool that connects to Google+. It improves your online reputation and adds a profile picture to your search engine listing, making you look more trustworthy and genuine.

    Make Your Site Mobile-Friendly

Every day, more and more people use mobile devices to access the internet. Making your site accessible for mobile users is crucial for your success. Most websites aren't easy to navigate using mobile platforms, so get ahead of the competition by making changes now.

Don't stress: making your site mobile-friendly isn't a complex task. If you have a WordPress site, a plugin like WPtouch can easily optimize your site when accessed from a mobile device. If you're tech-savvy, you also have the option of creating a site with a design that "responds" to a user's device.

    Commit to Engaging Your Readers

SEO has come to mean more than achieving a top spot on Google. Provide gripping content that keeps your audience intrigued. Consistently allow your personality to shine through engaging, useful content. Interact with your readers, giving them a place they'd like to come back and visit. In other words, create a hospitable online environment.

    Don't Forget About Basic SEO

Standard SEO practices, like alt tags, meta descriptions, and keyword placement, still apply. Take time to review your website to see if there are any foundational applications you may have missed.

You can't substitute quality content with backlinks and keywords, but basic SEO techniques still support great content by making it easier for Googlebot to find you.

In the near future, functionality will play a greater role in online success than sheer number of backlinks or keyword density.

Just a few days back Google made their first Pagerank update and despite all SEO effort that I put on my best ranked site, it dropped 1 point for second time in the past few months.

This makes me wonder if it's true what has been already procrastinated since a while back; the dead of SEO coming soon.

I think this is a big one that people need to keep in mind. If you used this practice at all in the past, it's time to contact those old sites and remove the links. It's not good for you to have them on those sites at all and can bring your site down more than many people may realize.
