    What Is Negative SEO

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) aims to improve the ranking of a page in organic search results. So, what is Negative SEO? Negative SEO works to relegate the current ranking of a page down the list of search results. Essentially, you are demoting the rank of a page instead of making it better. Now the question arises as to why anyone would want to demote their own page down the search result list. The answer is they don’t. Negative SEO is to website competitors like little kids sticking their legs out to trip their arch-enemies.

    What is Negative SEO
Every concerned website owner these days is looking to Negative SEO is hurting the rank of a page on the Search Engine Result Page (SERP) by doing the exact anti-thesis of what one would do to bump it up. Although, it is primarily used to downgrade the ranks of competitor website, businesses or politicians may also use it to maintain their reputation or degrade their competition. The sad news is that it can be hard to detect what’s going on before it’s too late.

    How Negative SEO Is Done

Now that you know the answer to the question what is Negative SEO, you might want to know about the ways to do it. Not that I encourage negative SEO, it’s still necessary to be educated in these matters to be able to know what not to do and how to protect your site from falling victim to this.

    Circumventing Their Security
The idea is to find the vulnerabilities in the site’s security using classic hacks and injections. Once access is acquired, these hackers may make changes to the site so that it will block web crawlers, inject spam or post links to spams on your site. All this may be done in a way that the webmasters might not even be aware of the debacle. Negative SEO can also be implemented by infecting the target site with a virus, as a page plagued with virus is flagged as potentially dangerous.

    Spam It Up
One of the defining techniques of negative SEO entails creating a website that is full of spams and is preferably banned. If it isn’t banned, it doesn’t take much to achieve that with all the advanced web crawling algorithms out there. Might as well sweeten the deal and duplicate the content of the target site. Then taking that spammy website link and pointing it straight to the target will definitely downgrade their rank and may even get them penalized. This can also be achieved using the handy ‘Report as Spam’ flags that are found all over the internet these days.

    Fake Emails
Another tactic for negative SEO involves creating fake email ids, and using them to mail other sites telling them to delete all the links that point to the target site. They mail mostly high-quality sites so that the target site’s link profile is deprived of quality links so much so that their rankings drop on the SERP.

    How Negative SEO Is Prevented

You now know what Negative SEO is, so you might ask how to protect your site from it. Luckily, there are a few things that can be done to keep your site from falling prey to such attacks.

Keep An Eye On Your Rankings – Just so you aren’t caught unprepared or worse catch up when it’s too late.

Find Your Weaknesses Before They Do - You need to strengthen the security of your website to protect it from any harm coming from malware and hackers.

Keep Your Link Profile Clean – Avoid buying links, link farming or related suspicious activity. All sites have a few spam links, but more than that and you raise suspicion.

Report Them Before They Report You – Google allows people to flag pages as spam. If you get too many complaints about your site, you are allowed to be paranoid and let Google know your concerns.

Anything that hurts your ranking is negative SEO. The rules however keep changing, so it's hard to tell.
